40 SpaceX Starlink Satellites Destroyed by Geomagnetic Storm. Forty satellites of SpaceX’s Starlink project are on the verge of destruction in the Earth’s atmosphere. These have lost their effectiveness in the face of geomagnetic storms.

SpaceX recently launched 49 more small satellites into orbit on the Falcon 9 rocket as part of the Starlink project. Since 2018, Elon Musk’s SpaceX has launched more than 2,000 satellites as part of the project. The main goal of this project is to provide high-speed internet service to all parts of the world.

The technology site, Senate Technology, says that soon after the new satellites were sent into space, a geomagnetic storm from the sun hit the Earth’s atmosphere. Geomagnetic storms are capable of affecting the Earth’s magnetic field. The satellite is at risk of being damaged later. The satellites can move away from their orbits in a storm.

According to SpaceX, after reaching space, the fate of those 40 satellites may have been the same. When a geomagnetic storm hits the Earth’s atmosphere, the intensity of the atmosphere’s inverse friction with the satellites increases. The manufacturer, SpaceX, tried to reduce the intensity of the frictional friction with the atmosphere by putting the satellites in “safe-mode.”

However, the company’s initial observation at the end of the storm said that the 40 satellites did not come out of the “safe-mode.” As a result, the satellites will not be able to reach the planned orbit.

SpaceX says that in this situation, the satellites will continue to fall towards the Earth’s atmosphere. On the way back, the satellites will be destroyed in the atmosphere as a result of friction with the atmosphere and the heat generated by it. The company fears that several satellites have already been destroyed.

On the other hand, space researchers are worried about the growing number of SpaceX satellites in space. In January, astronomers at the Zwicky Transient Facility said in a research report that the number of spots in space images taken through telescopes is increasing due to the Starlink project satellites.
