In the last few years, TikTok has become very popular among young people and teenagers. The company recently announced a series of small-scale experiments on how to prevent minors from accessing adult-friendly content. In this case, the company is examining the possibility and effectiveness of keeping the content “restricted” by the user himself and the guardians of the minor users.
At a recent press conference, the company, which owns tech giant ByteDance, said it was trying to set its own standards based on the ratings used in the movie and gaming sectors. TikTok said it will also test whether the content will be viewed by adults only, with a feature set by the creators.
Top social media sites have recently been plagued by allegations of neglecting the mental health of younger users. Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, the meta platforms, have come under fire, especially from US lawmakers.
Last year, former employees leaked Facebook’s internal documents. According to the document, Facebook knew that the content and algorithms of its own platform were having an adverse effect on the mental health of teenagers. But despite knowing everything, the company has remained silent in its greed for profit.
TikTok has also been accused of promoting harmful eating habits. However, the company has always said that it regularly deletes such content.
