Sony AI is Losing the Best GamersFor two years in a row, Sony has taught its own artificial intelligence (AI), GT Sophie, to play a racing game. This time the AI is losing to the world’s best gamers in video games.
Sony has been teaching GT Sophie to play the game “Gran Turismo Sport” for two years. GT Sop hie started losing to human gamers in the game’s “time trial” style races in July last year. According to a report by the technology site CNET, by mid-October, AIT had begun to win the race against its rivals.
After the car race, GT Sophie started winning chess and other games of the same genre. However, so far, scientists have come to think of these games only as part of the world of human intelligence. Sony’s AI also wins in classic Atari video games and real-time strategy games like StarCraft.
Current AI technology refers to a computer programming process that typically uses neural network technology. This technology seeks to follow the workings of the human brain. Sony’s achievements in the technology sector have also been recognized in mainstream science publications, including a research report published in the journal Nature.

“The AI drives in a way we could never have imagined,” said Takuma Miyazono, a gamer who won three challenges at the FIA Gran Turismo 2020 World Finals. He said that he could believe GT Sophie’s tactics only after seeing for himself.
The makers of conventional AIs usually teach the “deep learning” technique so that AIs can learn to recognize people’s faces or identify spam. According to the CNET, a completely different process was used in GT Sophie’s training.
Starting work in the process of “reinforcement learning” with an AI who has never been given any training before and does not even know what to do. It learns to race by repeatedly driving on the same course as human gamers. At one point, GT Sophie learns to win the game.
But in racing, it was difficult to teach AI the unwritten rules of not hitting or pushing the driver of another vehicle, said Peter Wurman, director of Sony’s AI division.
As he pointed out, all of us underestimated the difficulties of teaching sportsmanship.
According to the CNET, Sony’s AI has repeatedly performed simulations on computers connected to 1,000 PlayStation 4 consoles. The most recent high-speed graphics chip for AI training. However, AIT used conventional processor computers on the market while running the simulation.
